VH1 Storytellers Classics

0 ความคิดเห็น
Recommended more for quality of live performance than for storytelling, VH1 Storytellers: Classics is a seven-song compilation from the popular VH1 series, bearing all the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the program. Some of the featured musicians are fine raconteurs, and the format of the show encourages them to share the genesis of their best-known songs. Pete Townshend explains that the title of "Baba O'Riley" was a combination of two people who inspired him when he wrote the song: Indian spiritual teacher Meher Baba and electronic musician Terry Riley (he added the "O'" for a touch of Irish flavor). David Bowie explains how "China Girl" arose from a collaboration with Iggy Pop after a moving experience in a Berlin punk club; and before launching into an outstanding performance, Steely Dan's Donald Fagen describes "Kid Charlemagne" as an allusion to the passing of the 1960s.

Other performers have little or nothing to say about the songs they perform (when asked, Rod Stewart shamefully can't recall who originally played mandolin on "Maggie May"), but virtually all of these performances are first-rate and fully deserving of their inclusion. Surprisingly--or perhaps not--Ringo Starr provides the highlight, recalling how his melancholy feeling of exclusion during the recording of the Beatles' White Album led him to take a holiday in Sardinia. It was there that he was inspired to write "Octopus's Garden," and his performance of that song--with his hand-picked band the All- Stars--is as purely delightful as the original recording. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: Decent collection
Nothing to write home about, but a nice set of performances from the Storytellers series, with a few good moments. For the price (and potential length) of a VHS tape, this could've been a lot longer (it's only about 40 minutes).

A Song for You: Reality

0 ความคิดเห็น
A Song for You: Reality is a true story of a mans continued journey through life, singing lifes praises with determination to endure the challenges along the way, reaching its end, with a song for you. His persistence in learning to play the sax and playing it when others said he never would, is the testimony to the resilience needed to reach ones goal in life. This book is a song of hope and healing for anyone and everyone who is experiencing the realities of life, be it a life threatening illness, such as cancer or conflicts in the family that grow into secrets unspoken until becoming cancerous having to be removed. Through friendships, each having its own season, he comes to understand the melody of drama, the harmony of peace and the chords of sensitivity bound together making sense out of the pain and suffering that are like signs to live by on lifes journey. Having had a spiritual awakening to the silent and private pain of his mother, the author sees the reflection of her resilience. He recognizes it in other women and provides an opportunity for other men to experience it. This is a must read book.

Norman Luboff Remembered

Customer Review: Norman Luboff music
I have 2 of Norman's LP's: Christmas and Blues Right Now. How I wish they were on CD--sigh. Love the harmonics, the emotions all in endless COOL of BLues , and the beauty of the Christmas LP. I've never heard a more inspiring Christmas record in all these years. Miss you, Norman...
Customer Review: Superb.
A beautiful tribute to a great American musician. Some of his best-loved arrangements, popularized by the famed Norman Luboff Choir. Folk songs, spiritual, and ballads performed lovingly by some who toured and performed with him for more than a decade.

Sony Classical: Great Performances 1903-1998

Customer Review: Mish Mash
While I like this sort of recording I bought it only because it was quite cheap in the used section. It has some very interesting moments, but of course is little more than a "sampler" if you will, and one that is too stuffed with a variety performers that don't necessarily work well one against the other. To be specific, when Victor put out this sort of thing it would be "The First 100 Years at the Metropolitan Opera", and that traced just that. All the singers from 1903 until the 1983 release date. Its hardly perfect, but at least it has a purpose. EMI did a similar reissue, but it contained one CD at a time, so one could think carefully about that which they wanted to buy. This is one of the rare times I'm going to say there's just too much here, and not always of a good thing. They barely raid the cupboard of older recordings, and I assume Sony has a heck of a lot of them. Two CD sets from each decade could have been a far more intesting and thought provoking A&R decission. Four CDs that are aimed at nothing more than what I mentioned earlier don't really cut it

Customer Review: A Classic Pop Troubador
Michael Cialdella effortlessly establishes himself with this album as an artist to be reckoned with. The lyrics are well-crafted and soulful and the music proves that, reports to the contrary, it is still possible and permissible for a young songwriter to create melodies that are gorgeous and memorable. From the exuberance of the opening number, "Finally Free," through the unapologetic optimism of "Chasin' a Dream" to the haunting romantic revelations of "My Love No More," Cialdella proves himself in this eight song collection to be a pop troubadour in the classic mold.
Customer Review: Great Album!
Like a burst of fresh air, the uplifting songs take you on a beautiful journey that is sometimes joyful, sometimes melancholic, but always full of hope. The album is an energetic, inspiring celebration of life and of love. Its catchy tunes and great lyrics are an invitation to follow your dreams, wherever those dreams may lead. I highly recommend it.
